Topic: Development of a device for determining particle concentration profiles in the vehicle periphery
Particulate emissions can be absorbed into the human organism through breathing and therefore pose a considerable risk to health. Vehicles make a considerable contribution to particle pollution in urban areas. The impact of exhaust emissions could be significantly reduced by regulating them. The proportion of non-exhaust emissions (tyres and brakes) is therefore continuously increasing and currently accounts for approx. 75% of vehicle emissions. At 150kt/a, tyre-road contact is not only responsible for the majority of microplastic emissions in Germany, but also contributes significantly to airborne particle emissions (approx. 5-10% of the abrasion mass). As a result of this development, the European Commission is for the first time planning regulations to limit brake emissions as part of the Euro 7 legislation. The measurement procedures will initially focus on test bench measurements. In addition, the emission behaviour under real driving conditions (RDE) must also be assessed. As the interaction between the vehicle airflow and the particle movement is still largely unknown, the significance of previous measurements in road tests is limited.
The aim of the present work is to develop a device for determining particle concentration profiles in the vehicle periphery and to implement it both in terms of design and programming. On this basis, the particle dispersion of abrasion emissions is to be visualised and evaluated in road tests for different driving conditions (braking, acceleration, cornering).

Your Tasks:

* Familiarisation with the topic: non-exhaust emissions, particle measurement, measurement vehicles.
* Literature research on the influence of flow on particle topology in the area of the wheel arch (vehicle aerodynamics, particle-flow interaction, spray water analysis).
* Development of the measuring device as part of a constructive development process (CDP): Constructive and programming implementation and design
* Performance of driving tests, measurement data evaluation and visualisation of particle dispersion for certain driving manoeuvres (braking, acceleration, cornering)
* Differentiation and evaluation of the various emission sources (brakes, tyres, resuspension of road dust)

Necessary Skills:

* Ongoing studies in engineering or natural sciences such as mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, control engineering or a comparable degree programme
* Knowledge in the field of chassis, especially in the area of brakes and/or tyres
* Programming / sensor integration Arduino

Desired Skills:

* Knowledge in the field of chassis emissions and tribology
